As Pakistan’s Independence Day approaches, streets fill with plastic flags, banners, and decorations. But what if we celebrated 14th August in a more meaningful and sustainable way—one that honors not just our country’s freedom but also our planet?
Instead of contributing to plastic waste, consider celebrating with sustainable practices. Planting a tree, organizing a neighborhood clean-up, or creating a climate-themed mural can make a real difference. According to UNEP, plastic waste is one of the biggest threats to our ecosystems—especially single-use items like flags that end up in landfills within days.
Pakistan is among the top ten countries most vulnerable to climate change, as highlighted by the World Bank Climate Knowledge Portal. Extreme weather, floods, and droughts are increasing in frequency. Celebrating our national pride with actions that protect our environment is a step toward resilience and sustainability.
Last year in Karachi, the youth group Let’s Do It Pakistan replaced hundreds of plastic flags with tree saplings. In Swat, local schools organized a mural-painting competition to raise awareness about climate change. These initiatives prove that small actions can lead to powerful change.
